Grabbers

This little lady rides around in her wheelchair at the nursing home confused and angry at the world. She is 104. So imagine the confusion. She is always frantic about getting somewhere on time or taking care of business, so I think she reverts back to her past a lot. But she is constantly in this state, so call us heartless, but there comes a point where you have to walk by her and get your work done. She is also a grabber.

Oh, those are the fun residents. Grabbers are in a class all to themselves. They may look like little innocent 74 lb women who couldn't squeeze a fly, but that's just the trap to leer you in, my friend. They act all innocent, which gives you a false sense of security to walk within arms length when you pass them in the hallway, but then they grab you, and they don't let go. And you may not realize it at first. You may be twice their body weight and walking full speed ahead. But this doesn't stop them. Oh no, that's where the convience of being on wheels at all times comes in. They just roll with you, one hand on your scrubs, one hand waving in the air to tell you off. Or I have even had some who will have one hand on your scrubs and one hand on the wall rail so they have the upper hand, allowing them to halt you and yank you back towards them.

Well this particular lady was in panic mode today about something, and she finally gave up and started quoting a Psalms (please, Oh God, when I have no control over my actions let me be the demented person who quotes scripture, not the one who curses everyone out). My heart went out to her this particular day and I went over to her while she was panicking and gave her a hug and kissed her cheek (never good when you pull away from kissing a older person on their cheeks and you realize it was wet- how am I not sick more often). She grabbed my hands and said, "God bless you. You are just so sweet. You are so sweet. Thank you so much." And then she inquired, "Does your Mama know how sweet you are? Your Mama must be proud of you." Ah and then her sweetness wears off, "And If SHE ISN'T proud of you, you let ME know and I will let at her!" Watch out, Dee Ann Martin!
