Before making your diet plans for the new year, watch this documentary. What you choose to do with it is your own decision, but please allow yourself to be exposed and educated about our food system and to learn how we vote with our food dollars. One of the biggest shockers for me was how much the food industry controls our taste buds.

Take the above illustration, for example. I, like many Americans, have learned to only like boneless, white meat chicken. Bones and dark meat have grossed me out in the past. Because of the demand for white meat, the poultry industry has learned how to grow bigger chickens faster. Look at the size of a normal growing chicken in 1950's, grown with no "help." Then look at the chicken's that are grown in the conventional meat industry today. That picture above has motivated me to teach myself to like a whole chicken in it's natural state. This is opposed to the large chested, mechanically altered chickens we have slowly "been programmed" to like.
Animals that are raised free range are able to get exercise and build muscle so their meat are naturally lower in saturated fat and higher in omega 3's/healthy fats. Animals were created to eat certain food. Here's a great article about cow's who don't eat grass.
As always when it comes to food choices, no judgement here. I just encourage you to make sure you are well informed and truly know what's going into your food, and how the animals are cared for. I was already eating local and pretty natural, and I was still pretty shocked by it all. Especially the way the kill the poor little pigs. Sadness.
But even more importantly, this movie shows you how the FARMERS are treated. It really is a bully system where a lot of farmers have their hands tied. Honestly, it reminds me of the mob a little bit. To find local farms to buy real food from, click on the link for local harvest.
